When we are young
It seems ever the dawn of day
What is in our hearts
We feel all eternity is left to say
When in our prime
In the noontime of our way
Ahead is still more time
So we joke rather than feelings convey
As we come to the edge of night
Let us our “Roxanne loves” finally declare
Like Cyrano in the fading light
Our true feelings lay bare
Padre
Today’s prompt: Use the phrase “fading light” in a poem or piece of prose.
That’s beautiful, and good advice to the young

We better pledge love before it’s too late.

I like this line: “So we joke rather than feelings convey” coupled with the last one.

So much wisdom and truth in this.

You had me at /in the noontime of our way/, and I love calling our winter years /the edge of night/. Sage advice, indeed. By the by, I appeared in a production of CYRANO, and I absolutely adore the poetic dialogue. In movies, Jose Ferrer won an Oscar, but I preferred the French version with Gerard Depardieu.

Spoken only as someone at the edge of night. So much easier to speak our truth when the end is in sight.

So true. We always think we have a lot of time until we don’t.

Great advice. Love hidden can be grueling.

We always urge ourselves towards expression, but I believe that, like in your poem, it often needs to go hand in hand with Time. Lovely, ponderous poem.
