Dust-dry ground heated
And soon to be baked by the sun
Bleached grass and receding ponds
E’er since the Spring begun.
Where are those kisses of moisture sweet,
Those drops of cooling life?
Wispy cloud pass over head
But their rich treasures they withhold.
Then it happens a few sharp drops,
Bullet-like pelt the ground.
Dust explodes from impact firm
But then the barrage does cease
The teasing done, the clouds move on
Leaving the sun to bake in peace
Padre
I love that exploding dust! A summer storm indeed.

I can remember droughts like this, when the sight of a cloud brought such joy, a hope for precious rain, only to be disappointed again and again. Good writing, Padre.

Oh you’ve described so well a parched earth and a far too-quick sudden storm that is like pellets bouncing off the scorched ground. Excellent description.

What a disappointment when the land is parched and the rain clouds are an empty promise. You’ve captured the feeling well.

I’ve never known a drought like the one in your poem, but I can almost taste the dust and feel the heat. These lines are indeed a tease:
‘Where are those kisses of moisture sweet,
Those drops of cooling life?’
I love the progression from ‘a few sharp drops’ to ‘Bullet-like pelt’ and the explosion of dust – it could be in slow-motion.

A delightful poetic description of rain I experience on Oregon’s high desert! Cheers.
