There was great excitement that the pro game was coming to Nashville. The problem was what to call the team. There were some that wanted to call them the Old Hickories, but that didn’t test well because of Jackson’s dark legacy. They next floated the idea of Volunteers, but that was deemed confusing because of the state’s college team. The Tennesseans was proposed, but drew criticism from folks in Memphis that didn’t want to be lumped in with Nashville. Opry was rejected as country music had a demographic that some believed racist. So after months of consultation and consideration, the press release announced that the Nashville Nashvillians would take the field next season.
