I met a they the other day
They was labelled a “she” but wasn’t happy that way
“They was” isn’t correct, I hear you say
But if they is a singular – it must work that way
Don’t get me wrong – I’m happy to use
Whatever pronoun that you choose
It’s the grammar only that makes me wince
As our language suffers growing pains
As new views and agendas we evince

It’s not difficult you know: “I met them the other day. They were labelled…” I feel you’re mangling the language on purpose to make your reactionary point.

Reactionary as accused, but honestly only linguistically. I constantly battle with my students over the use of language such as “Sick” being used as a positive, etc. I also resist the use of “text speak” in standard usage. I have students that say “Lol” as a word, not l. o. l. , but lol.
